The Supreme Court on Monday confirmed its order awarding Uttar Pradesh politician D.P. Yadav's son, Vikas, 25 years' sentence without remission in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case having noted that it has the power to impose "special sentences".

Yadav's son, Vikas, 25 years' sentence without remission in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case having noted that it has the power to impose "special sentences".The judicial prcedents expansion of jail sentences over above as presceibed in law was upheld by a bench of justices Dipak Misra and C. Nagappan.
"All sentences would run concurrently", said Supreme Court.


Considering the murder of the young Katara, an MBA graduate and the son of a senior Railway official as an ‘honour killing' to stop his relationship with Vikas's sister Bharti had raised a public cry for justice.


The convicts, Vikas and his cousin Vishal Yadav were termed the award of life term "simpliciter" as inconsequential and enhanced life term to 25 years imprisonment without remission and an additional five years for destruction of evidence by the Delhi High Court.


The third accused Sukhdev Pehelwan was awarded 25 years of imprisonment without the benefit of remission by the Supreme Court. The murder had been confirmed a "very well planned" by the Supreme Court on 17th August.
